Catch up with the First Reformed Church (Sully) IMPACT team! Brock and Tyler share about their day of painting and sanding a pastor’s house, the vital role of the local community center, and the impact of spending time and playing basketball with children at a nearby school.
Our day began with a warm breakfast of eggs, ham, and toast before we went out into the community. Our mission: working on a house for a local pastor. We spent the morning painting and sanding, with plans to finish the rest tomorrow. This property was once an exciting farm that schools would visit, almost like a zoo. Even today, the scars of Hurricane Dorian from 2019 are visible, with paths leading through areas of once-lush trees and wildlife still showing signs of destruction.
A truly cool experience was having lunch at a local community center. Their centers serve a vital and unique role, operating as a storm shelter, a gathering place, and even, recently, a wedding reception hall. It is the heart of the community—a place where people regularly build and strengthen their relationships. With a playground and basketball court also heavily used, this center was one of the very first buildings to be rebuilt after the hurricane, allowing the community to begin healing both physically and emotionally.
After lunch, we took a group of girls to a nearby school to watch a few lessons and spend time playing with the children. It is a genuine blessing to see how truly happy these kids are to see us and interact. We played a basketball game where our girls were a little outnumbered, but the chance to interact and grow with the Bahamian people is profoundly impactful. We are returning tomorrow to complete some yard work at the house, take more people to the school, and, most importantly, continue to shed Christ’s love on this resilient community.
