The Way – Culture Day

The Newton Church of the Way is located in the community of Newton, IA. The Way team experiences Abaco’s culture and natural wonder by visiting Sawmill Sink Bluehole and Little Harbour.

Our day started at the farmers market in Marsh Harbour this morning. We were able to see the space in use after our hard work on previous days of painting and hanging drywall. It was exciting to see the vendors and be able to purchase wonderful goods from them such as cookie cups, whoppie pies, donuts, jams, breads and the fresh produce we helped harvest from Driftwood Farms. The vendors were very thankful for their new space and it looked great!

From there we ventured to the Sawmill Sink Blue Hole which is a natural trap cave in the middle of an Abaco Pine forest. It is a fresh water source with unknown depth.Scuba drivers have not been able to reach its bottom. Some of our more adventurous teammates jumped from the edge while others floated or waded in, but ultimately all of us were in awe of this natural wonder.

We then went to Petes Pub in Little Harbour for lunch. Many of us enjoyed fresh fish specials. Our food was amazing!! We were able to enjoy both an interesting rock beach as well as a calm swimming beach as one was located on each side of the restaurant. Before leaving, we decided to participate in the Petes Pub tradition of hanging a signed shirt to commemorate our visit.

Our final stop was Winding Bay Beach, a white sand beach adjacent to Winding Bay Golf Course. Most of us walked the fine pinkish sand beach and enjoyed the beautiful turquoise water before heading back to camp.
