Hear from Abbie and Aly about their third day in Abaco. They were able to continue work on Mr. Zhivargo’s home right alongside him. The day concluded with time spent at the beach cooling off. The Pella Christian IMPACT team has had a busy, but fulfilling week so far!
We started off our day very similar to Saturday. After breakfast in the morning, we were ready to work on Mr. Zhivargo’s home. The goal was to finish sheetrocking and to build his front porch. Although it was quite hot before we left, the weather was beautiful with few clouds and a splendid breeze. We were able to get far having all the ceilings done, most of the walls, and just a few more boards on the porch. It was really neat to see everyone work together on the house and get it closer to being finished.
Sheetrocking was a great learning experience. Having to constantly double, triple, and even quadruple check measurements was frustrating, but worth it when it fit perfectly. Thankfully we had many sheetrocking veterans to aid us in our tricky endeavors such as driving screws into ceilings and precariously walking across beams to safely enter and exit Mr. Zhivargo’s under-construction house.
Getting to work on the porch not only with other students, but with Mr. Zhivargo by our side, was inspiring. Being able to see his excitement and dedication to progressing his house so that he could eventually live there with his son was encouraging. At the end of the day,we went swimming and paddle boarding in the ocean! Even though there wasn’t much sun and the wind was very present, we all had a blast getting a chance to get our feet wet. We are going to go back tomorrow to Mr. Zhivargo’s and can’t wait to get back to the porch and finish it up along with the sheetrock on the walls!
