Day two in Abaco by Isaac Natelborg, a student with Pella Christian’s team
This morning, struggling to get up, I was excited to go back to work. Originally going on this trip I thought that I would like the chilling and free time but after working yesterday I had lots of fun and now prefer helping out over the free time. We have 3 Keiths at the worksite and it causes lots of confusion. One of them we call Thee Keith and he started up an organization called Crisis Relief and that’s who we’ve been helping out today, yesterday and tomorrow. He told us a story about how he started up Crisis Relief. I’d like to write about it all but that would take too much space but a key thing that stood out to me was that he wasn’t a Christian until 42 and that his wife had a glioblastoma (brain cancer). He said that his wife was a Christian and that was what encouraged him to become a Christian. I found this story of how he came to know God and how God’s plan led him to helping thousands of lives. This was impactful especially to me because my mom had a Glioblastoma and through that I was able to see how there were positive benefits even in a horrible situation.
Through this trip I have seen all of the hard situations people are living in and they still are in a good mood despite their hardships. We had 7 kids come and visit us and they were all happy and full of joy. At supper I was helping a kid get his food and I put a pile of rice and he kept asking for more so I kept giving him more. I also broke the rules and gave him an extra chicken leg to begin with (not knowing if he would finish both). I thought there was no way he was going to eat all of the food and to my surprise he downed that all. I later found out that it could possibly be their only meal for the day and felt good that I gave him extra. This has shown me even more that people’s attitudes are good in bad situations and that has inspired me to do the same. Side note – all I have been thinking about is spearfishing after I overheard that there were some spears and I hope to shoot a fish and eat that on this trip at least once. Maybe in the next few blogs there will be a picture of me holding a fish.
