Rebecca & Deb share about their expectations coming into Abaco after having gone on trips to Haiti since 2017.
Before we came to Abaco there was a mourning that is was not Haiti. And the first few days it was a battle for several of us not to compare our experiences in Haiti to the island of Abaco and the needs we saw here. On our trips before we had seen desperation and their immediate physical needs were very evident. On Abaco, it took us longer to see the same heart needs hidden behind smiling faces and a very welcoming Bahamian people. After being here a week, God has shown up in a big way. God has shown us He is at work here in Abaco. As much as we miss Haiti, we are seeing God at work in many ways here in Abaco. Many people here talk of Abaco before. “Before” is before Hurricane Dorian. It is a time in history that will change this island and its people forever. We have heard amazing stories of God’s faithfulness through the storm. And His continued faithfulness after the storm. We have had the privilege to help clean up storm damage, prayer walk a new community, paint dorm rooms to hold more teams, and plant God’s hope in a community trying to rebuild physically and spiritually. We are leaving tomorrow glad to have glimpsed God is at work in Abaco as in Haiti and looking forward to, God willing, coming back next year to see how God is rebuilding lives, homes, and hearts in Abaco.
