Abaco from a Teen’s Perspective and a Mother’s

We started our day by going back to Murphy Town Community Center that was destroyed by the hurricane. At the community center we painted and went over the coats we had done the previous day, while others went to the local primary school (CAPS) nearby to help to set up books for a new library. We all worked up a sweat today. After we had done all the hard work, we went to a church called Kirk of The Pines to help with G2, a youth group that happens every Wednesday night.

From a teen’s perspective, the people here in Abaco are caring, joyful, and appreciative. The people here in Abaco do not complain and just trust the process and let God move them to do the work. This made an impact on me because I realized how ungrateful we can be back in the US. We have to realize there are people, like in Abaco, who’s home has been destroyed by a natural disaster and they still have joy.

Karla: Today the experience that really captured my attention was when a young man by the name of JJ came to the community center to assist in painting once again.  He came with no expectations, he was more relaxed than the day before and even sang gospel songs with us as we  painted.  JJ shared some of his experiences growing up. JJ and I played basketball together a little later and he told me about his family in Florida and the stories he hears from them. JJ and I may play soccer another day, he let me know that he will win.

The 2nd situation was with a young man named Grey.  He was at the youth group tonight and at the end when there was a call for anyone that needed prayer.  Grey came forward and came to me and asked for prayer.  He mentioned having something weighing heavy on his heart but didn’t want to go into detail.  I have never been “taught to pray” but I pray MY way.  The words flowed and I felt as if the words were brought to me to say exactly what he needed.  He thanked me and then asked for a photo with me.  His smile was so big as he left the room.

My heart is full with joy and pride, and I am so glad to be apart of this team.
