A sense of accomplishment and vision for the future are the final reflections from members of the Newton Church of The Way IMPACT Team. They wrapped up their time in Abaco with a final day of impact: touring a hydroponic farm, painting, packing bags of supplies for those in need, and completing construction.
Our final day was packed with activity, and it was very satisfying to see some projects get completed.
For the last day in Abaco, we headed out to Driftwood Farms, which is a large hydroponic vegetable farm, growing everything from bananas and guava to tomatoes and green beans. They also have a large chicken tractor that is mobilized around the farm. Owner Tracy Kelly was gracious enough to give us a tour and answer any questions we had.
After the farm tour, we split up into three teams. The first team came back to camp and started painting part of the yellow bungalow, followed by a trip to town to shop for souvenirs.
The second team went to the Many Hands storage unit, where they packed at least 104 bags full of supplies for those in need, filling them with soap, paper towels, wet wipes, and other items they might use.
Meanwhile, the third team headed back to Tracy’s house and buttoned up some exterior work as well as some drywall inside. We all felt a sense of accomplishment being able to finish the work we’d started, and it was satisfying.
After all the work, all three teams met at the new property for MH4A and were given a tour with the hope that a new campus will be built by 2028.
By 1:30, we were back to camp in time for lunch, and then did our debrief. After we were given two hours to complete our Impact Stories, by 5:00, we were ready to share. We were halfway through by 6:00 and had dinner. Afterwards, we were able to finish up sharing our Impact stories with one another.
