An Adventure to Begin a Journey

Today is the beginning of our IMPACT Journey, but our travels here have been an adventure of another kind. Our days have been seemingly endless and our eyes, even today, are tired. All in all, we made it all the way to Abaco safe and sound.

Our first day of travel excited us as much as it wore us out (“except for Ian” – Ian). We all rose before the sun, said goodbye to our parents and spouses, and traveled to Fresno International Airport to catch our first flight of the day. We made it to our gate just a few minutes before boarding and made it to Dallas on time. There we had lunch and our flight was delayed. Once we made it to Florida, we were picked up by MFI (Missionary Flights International) volunteers and taken to their hospitality center where we had dinner and rested up for the next day.

Saturday morning we loaded the vans again and made the two-minute drive to Fort Pierce. We boarded the DC-3 and took off toward Abaco. The plane itself was an experience on its own. This world war two model aircraft has been restored by the MFI team. We all agreed it was the smoothest ride of the three we had taken and loved to be so close to the ocean as we flew (we had a cruising altitude of 11,000 feet).

Saturday afternoon we enjoyed the ocean surrounding Camp Abaco. The camp has been long-term leased by Many Hands and they plan to be a part of the community for a long time. From what the staff calls ‘The Warehouse’ we got a hold of some seaworthy paddle boards and kayaks, then began to explore the beaches and the cove had to offer. We found a beach and the boys fashioned some sort of sailboat and became captains. They also say that they had a close call with a large shark, but you can choose whether you believe that or not.

Sunday morning, we had the option of attending The Kirk of the Pines or the Haitian Baptist Church. Those who went to the Haitian Baptist Church say that it was amazing, the entire service was in Kreyol and kids ran around the church during the three-hour service. This afternoon we discovered a good snorkeling spot and swam until we needed to go in for dinner.

We look forward to sharing our IMPACT Journey with you all, until tomorrow.
