Greetings from warm and sunny Abaco!
Our first day began at 3 am (Tuesday) in Dallas to catch a flight to Miami where we boarded a small plane to Abaco. Laura met us there and then arrived at camp around noon. The ride from the airport was sobering as we viewed the devastation and stripped pine trees. After lunch some of us went back to Marsh Harbor to help tutor a group of 12 energetic kids possibly due to a recent Valentine candy sugar high. The rest stayed and assembled some new wooden bunk beds the camp needed for ongoing issues with termites. The evening found us really needing some sleep after our time of reflection. The sound of the waves nearby contributed to a great night of rest.
Day two began with a tour of Marsh Harbor which gave us added perspective on all the damage Hurricane Dorian caused, while also hearing the hope for a brighter future. After lunch a different group left to tutor the same group of kids and the remainder stayed at camp to build shelving for one of the dorms. We then all left to participate in a youth group night at Kirk of the Pines in town and had the opportunity to break up into groups to reflect on the speaker’s message of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. While we were there, we were treated to a beautiful rainbow confirming God’s care and promises to His world.
Blessings to all!
