It was a wonderful day here in Abaco loving, serving, and learning about the people who live here. How uplifting to start the day with devotion on the beach. After breakfast, we had a tour of Abaco island, which included Marsh Harbour, the marina, and the harbor. Along the way, we stopped at a church, a grocery store, and other places of interest. We ended our tour at a community center where we painted inside and outside, did repairs, and helped clean up. This center is vital to the people and is used for many purposes. Everywhere we were welcomed with smiles and appreciation.
The team talk to community leader Derek Dawkins
At one stop, our leader Jim visited with a young man and his two sons who wondered about our activities. We were standing on a cement slab where there had been a church and living quarters. The man shared his story of being in the building with his family when Dorian leveled it. Hearing his first-hand testimony as a survivor and his strong faith in God’s protection was the most impactful moment of the day.
Praying with the family that survived Hurricane Dorian
The impact of Hurricane Dorian in 2019 on Abaco cannot be underestimated. Progress is slow, and there is a shortage of material, manpower, and money. We saw repaired buildings and some new construction mixed in with utter destruction.
