Farm n’ Fun

The first full day in Abaco for the Kraal Michigan Team and Trinity Church Group. The Team enjoyed learning about agriculture at Driftwood Farms and spending time with the local youth at G2.

Today was our first full day in Abaco, we traveled about 20 minutes south to Driftwood Farms which is a Hydroponic Farm. It was really cool to see how they adapted to the climate/environment to be able to run a self-sustaining operation for the community and themselves. They were able to install Solar Panels to run the watering system which is very helpful so they don’t have to rely on Island Power. They also figured out a way to make their own “dirt”.

They combine Coconut Core and Rice Husk as “dirt” which works very effectively in holding moisture as well as providing a good seed bed for the plants to grow well. It was interesting for me (Noah) to see this way of farming. Coming from the states we do it very very differently as our ground isn’t mostly Limestone.

Overall the group thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the Planting, Growing, and Harvesting Process and it all came full circle at lunch where we ate what we gathered. Followed by a highly competitive game of volleyball.

After the farm the group headed back to Camp for a little R&R before we headed off to G2 (Growth Groups) which is a Youth Group style get together for kids ages 11-17. We enjoyed getting to know some of the kids through different sports and small groups. We also had the opportunity to host some “Minute to Win it” games that the kids really enjoyed.

The group enjoyed making connections with some of the kids on a more personal level. It is really encouraging to see all of these kids voluntarily coming to “Youth Group” either to have a fun time with friends or to learn about Jesus. All in all we had a great day of work and play, the group is exhausted and will report back tomorrow. Signing off.
