Fixing Doors as God Opens Doors

In this blog I want to highlight our men. Kent Means, Scott Breidinger, Roger Morris, Lon Peterson, and Apple Kroger have been an incredible team of construction workers.  They have built kitchen cabinets, reinforced shelving, hooked up gas and electric appliances, repaired water lines, realigned doors on their loose hinges, and hung camp banners to name a few of their completed projects so far.  Building stair railings, clothes lines, and organizing the warehouse are still left on the list, among other tasks. Personally, I want to thank them for taking care of my heavy luggage, carrying the 5 gallon water jugs to our room, and helping me reach things, so I don’t need to find a ladder!

After church on Sunday, we ate at a restaurant called Colors by the Sea.  It was a lovely place and the food was fantastic.  My view was beautiful with my chair facing the sea.

However, the guys on the other side of our table had a view of a hurricane ravaged building.  After the meal they noticed a gentleman struggling to get a door back on the hinges.  Living out scripture and fulfilling the point of Many Hands missions, our guys jumped into action, crossed the street, and offered their help.  The door was successfully installed with the extra helping hands before we headed back to camp.  Hebrews 13:16 tells us this, “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifice is pleasing to God.”  Kudos to the guys on our team for sharing their gifts in doing good on the Abaco Campus and for seeing those doors of opportunity that God opens for us.

Acts 2:44-45 tells us of the fellowship of the first Believers…  “And all who believed were together and had all things in common.  And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.”  Now those of us at Camp Abaco are not selling our possessions, as there are no buyers in the area, but I love how each of us are sharing what we can with the others who are in need.  Throughout the day, one person might say, “I wish I had brought a thing along with me.”  And more times than not, another person will say, “I packed a thing that I’m not using.  Here, have mine!”  A hairdryer, super glue, a sharpie marker, and a pair of scissors are just a few things, not to mention all of the shared snacks at the end of the day.

Along with sharing our stuff, sharing our time in serving one another has also been a blessing.  Karmen Brown, our fearless leader, put together a rotating schedule where 3 people on the team take care of the prayer before and the clean-up after each meal.  On Sunday, the Camp Abaco staff has the day off, so we also took turns with the cooking for those meals.  Here’s a shout out to our cooks for the week, Lucy and Lula.  The food may be a little on the spicy side for some, but I’ve certainly enjoyed it.  And kudos to our team chefs on Sunday.  Nikia Howlin mastered the griddle for some awesome pancakes in the morning, and Brenda Keniston made a fabulous spaghetti sauce for supper that night.  Without being asked, the guys jumped in and washed up the dishes.  Once again, proving that Many Hands make light work!
