Growth and Future

Kathy and Craig Wassenaar from the Kamerman-IMPACT team share about time spent in the community of Abaco, getting to know a partner organization, Driftwood Farms, and spending time with Abaconian youth! Read more about these powerful relationship here!

Today, we had the privilege of visiting the Driftwood hydroponic farm. It’s truly impressive how they’ve optimized their system to maximize productivity within a relatively small space. Tracy and Duran graciously guided us through the facility, and we immediately rolled up our sleeves and got to work. Our tasks included hand-mixing soil substitutes, harvesting ripe tomatoes, meticulously removing pesky tomato worms, collecting fresh eggs from the chickens, preparing pots for new plantings, and sowing bean seeds.

It was fascinating to delve deeper into the farm’s operations and its relationship with Many Hands. We contribute our labor, and in return, they provide us and the individuals we support with nutritious produce—including a wonderful taco salad for lunch. The farm’s future plans are equally exciting, with the addition of shrimp and tilapia ponds on the horizon.

In the evening, we joined the high school leadership team from Kirk of the Pines for a friendly game of basketball and volleyball. We shared a delicious spaghetti dinner at the local Agape Christian School gym. It was inspiring to engage with these young leaders and learn about their experiences during and after the hurricane. Their resilience, maturity, and aspirations for the future were truly uplifting.
